January 2013

                                                                                                            8th January 2013

Dear Parent/Guardian,

A Good Busy Term

We have enjoyed a good busy term so far. Compliments and thanks to all the students and staff for their co-operation and hard work. Memorable events and successes such as Back to the 80s, the Senior Girls’ Basketball Team victory, Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire, promising starts by our football teams, excellent exam results and progression to third level all boost spirits.

We are mindful of the changes the economic climate is having on our community and are committed to supporting our students in preparation for their lives ahead. We believe in the importance of education, not just in terms of employment but also in the development of well rounded, thoughtful and hardworking young adults who will rise to future challenges.

School Reports

Parents of First and Second year students will find enclosed their child’s school report. For some this will be an affirmation of a good term’s work, for others it may serve as a wakeup call to study harder. We ask you to take time to discuss the report with your child. Please praise and encourage accordingly.

Study, Homework & Mock Exams

Supervised study takes place every day from 4-6pm. It is recommended for all students especially those sitting examinations. Homework is needed for class, study is needed for exams.

We want our children to get the best education possible. To achieve this we urge students to work with their teachers and dedicate themselves to their studies.  Students should attend school every day.  Evidence shows students who miss class under perform at exams. There are no free classes. There is always work to do.

Mock exams and the deadlines for projects, oral and practical exams are fast approaching.  Examination students will find enclosed an order form for their mocks to be returned on or before 25th January 2013.

CAO, H.E.A.R. & D.A.R.E - February 1st Deadline

The deadline for CAO, H.E.A.R. and D.A.R.E. applications for third level is 1st February.   Senior students have a career guidance class every week and benefit from advice from our Guidance Counsellor, Ms. Quinn. Parents are welcome to call Ms. Quinn on Thursdays if they have specific questions about third level education or general queries about their child’s studies.

Respect for Church, Cemetery and Convent Grounds

We ask parents to impress upon students to respect the local Church, cemetery and Convent grounds.

Family Contribution and Student Insurance

The Board of Management would like to thank all who have made their voluntary family contribution. These contributions fund all our student activities. Without this fund we would not be in a position to offer our students the programme they receive. The B.O.M. will still gratefully accept contributions and also recommend that all students avail of the Pupil Personal Accident Insurance Scheme. Outstanding book rental fees are due.

Code of Good Behaviour

Numerous inspectors and visitors to our school have commented on how pleasant and friendly our students are and how well wear they wear the school uniform. We would like all students to follow this positive lead and remind them of the following:

  • Students may not go down town without permission.
  • Students must wear black shoes. Pumps, keds or runners are not allowed.
  • Students may not wear track suit pants.
  • Facial piercing is prohibited.

The School Journal

It is good to check your child’s journal regularly – it tells you a lot about what they are doing or are not doing as the case may be.  Please use the absence, lateness and notes slips. We ask parents to come to reception to sign out their child if they are going home early. Students must have a note from their Parents/Guardian or signed permission from their Yearhead. Mobile phones may not be used during school hours. Communication between students and home should go through the office.

HSE & MMR Vaccination

The HSE are offering the MMR vaccination to all students in the coming weeks. Each student will receive a consent form & information pack in the coming days. Please return same to the office.
