Course Outline
Business is part of a General Education. It forms part of the student’s personal and social development. It gives students an insight into managing money on a personal and national level as well as an understanding of the economic environment. It has many practical applications for students in their daily business activities now and in the future.
The Syllabus is split into 4 main sections, that students study over 3 years:
- The Business of Living
- Economic Awareness
- Enterprise
- Information Technology
It leads on to Business/Accounting/Economics/Marketing and is also a great help for
L.C.V.P.
Assessment
Business Studies is assessed at both Higher and Ordinary levels.
Higher Level
Paper 1 consists of:
Section A - 20 Short Questions @ 4 marks each.
Section B - 6 Long Questions - answer 4 @ 40 marks each.
Total Marks for Paper 1 = 240 Marks.
Time Allowed 2½ hours.
Paper 2 consists of 6 Long Questions – answer 4 @ 40 marks each.
Time Allowed 2 hours.
Total Marks for Paper 2 = 160 Marks.
Total Marks for both papers = 400 Marks.
Ordinary Level
One Paper
Section A 20 Short Questions @ 5 marks each.
Section B 8 Long Questions – answer 5 @ 60 marks each.
Time Allowed 2½ hours.
Total Marks = 400 Marks.

Course Outline
Year 1:
Students introduced to:
Health & safety in the workshop. Hand tools and power tools
Trees - Native softwoods and hardwoods, cross section. Seasoning & conversion of timber.
Defects in timber
Year 2:
Woodturning, Veneering, adhesives,
Begin junior certificate section A short questions.
Year 3:
Emphasis on design/freehand sketching of projects/orthographic projection.
Junior certificate project design/manufacturing
Project Work
Year 1:
Emphasis on learning basic functions of individual hand tools and their correct use. Model making where students design and manufacture models such as a boat, aeroplane, car/truck, helicopter. Seasonal projects ie. Christmas crib or tree, St Patricks day logo. In the latter half of the year students are introduced to traditional woodwork joints such as T Halving, Dovetail Halving, Mortice & Tenon.
Year 2:
More emphasis on projects similar to what can be expected at Junior Cert, for example, a spice rack and mirror stand. Students again design their own projects. Students also are introduced to traditional joints.
Year 3:
Junior certificate projects issued late October and students work on this until end of April.
Assessment
Students must present their own unique project with accompanying folder, (student are issued with a choice of 3 projects at the end of October and must chose 1). Student must therefore have decided on what level they will be doing before selecting a project as choices for higher and ordinary level are different.
Project together with folder accounts for approximately 40% of overall exam.
Written paper in June consists of section A and section B. Section A contains 20 short questions and 16 must be answered and section B consists of 5 long questions of which 3 must be answered. This accounts for the other 60% of the marks.

Course Outline
The Technical Graphics programme is essentially about communicating ideas using Graphics. Before any new idea is developed an inventor or designer must visualise what they wish to achieve, and go through a long process of design, manufacture and refinement before it appears in a retail outlet. Thomas Edison invented the light bulb after many years’ research and development; this illustrates the time, patience and perseverance it takes for an inventor to develop an idea which will have an impact on society. Technical Graphics as well as being the language of designers and engineers is also an internationally recognised means of communication and transcends all language barriers.
Junior Cert. Technical Graphics develops the fundamentals of drawing skills and techniques. Some of the main topics covered in the course are:
Plane Figures and Polgyons
Orthographic Projection (Elevation, Plan and End Elevations)
Developments
Isometric and Oblique drawing
Ellipses and Parabolas
Transformation Geometry
Auxiliary Projection
Technical Graphics is a huge help with other practical subjects like Woodwork and Metalwork. It also has strong links with the Maths and Art courses.
Project Work
There is no marks given for project work in Technical Graphics at the moment. However, all students work is hands on, as they do drawings each day in class. These drawings are all put into their folders and by the end of Junior Cycle pupils will have a substantial portfolio of drawings.
Students will also be given time to learn how to use CAD package Solidworks to produce 3D models and 2D drawings on screen. This software is used in Senior Cycle Drawing to produce a 40% project so students will have good preparation for that.
ASSESSMENT
Junior Certificate Technical Graphics is examined at both Higher and Ordinary Levels
The exam is two and half hours at Ordinary Level and three hours at Higher Level. It is broken into two sections. Section A has 15 short questions with students marked out of the best 10. Section B has 6 long questions with students marked out of their best 4.

Course Outline
The new revised syllabus has been designed to cater for students of all abilities. It is much more activity-based than the previous syllabus and emphasises the practical experience of science. Through investigations and experiments, students develop science processing skills and a knowledge of the underlying concepts.
The course has been broken down into three main sections as follows:
Biology – In this section of the course students will learn about human and plant biology.
Chemistry – The study of chemistry provides students with a better understanding of our material world and the processes by which materials change, including the study of acid and bases, the periodic table, water, oxygen, carbon dioxide, etc.
Physics – This section helps students explore and investigate the laws and relationships that govern our world and how things work, for example electricity, sound, light, motion, etc.
Practical and Project Work
Course Work A - 10% - Experiments are done in class and written up in a booklet format over the three years of study.
Course Work B - 25% - The Department send three experiment titles two of which must be done by the student. They are written up in a booklet that is sent away for correction. In Glenamaddy Community School we assign one day for all third year students to carry out these experiments.
Assessment
The Junior Certificate Science course is examined at both higher and ordinary levels.
The Junior Certificate marks are broken down as follows:
Course Work A - 10%
Course Work B - 25%
Examination in June - 65%
The written examination in June will have one exam paper and students will be given two hours to sit the exam.
