CROSS COUNTRY 2012/13
Cross Country St Mary’s College Galway Nov 29th 2012
The cross country season kicked off with a pre-season race in St Mary’s College Galway on Nov 29th 2012. On a very cold afternoon in Galway, Glenamaddy Community School ran in two races, Minor Boys & Intermediate Boys.
Our 1st Years ran a great Minor Boys race with Macdara Geraghty finishing in 6th place and Diarmid Seevers-Coen, Thomas Lambe & Gerard Comer (who has just returned from a broken collar bone) finishing strong.
The Intermediate Boys Team faced strong opposition from Oranmore, St Mary’s, St Enda’s, Woodford, & The Bish. The Team worked well together with Mickey Lyons, Jason Egan, Aidan Keaveny & Conor Tully chasing down the lead pack of Oranmore and St Mary’s throughout the race to secure a 3rd placed podium finish for the Team.
For some it was a tough hard race but everyone can be proud of their performance. Well done all!!!
This was a good start to the cross country season with more to come at the Cross Country Challenge being hosted by Glenamaddy Community School on Dec 6th 2012.
Glenamaddy Cross Country Challenge
Glenamaddy Community School hosted its first ever Cross Country Competition on Dec 6th 2012.
On a cold and wintery day, Glenamaddy Community School & Holy Rosary College Mountbellew battled it out over six races.
In the Minor Girls Race (1500m), Mountbellew dominated in the opening lap, but Caoimhe Keaveney and Fia Molloy got to grip with the course and reeled in the Mountbellew runners to finish in 2nd and 3rd place.
In the Junior Girls Race (2000m), Leeane Davis, Deirdre Dolan, Karen Garvey, Michaela Joyce and Stephanie Joyce ran a strong race. However, Mountbellew took all three podium places with Leeane Davis finishing a very close 4th place.
After a close opening lap in the Intermediate Girls Race (3000m), Rosin Morgan, Kaysha Murray, Rachel Kelly and Yana Metlova started putting some distance between them and the Mountbellew team with Rosin, Kaysha & Rachel taking all podium places. Well done ladies!!
In the Minor Boys Race (2000m), two of the stand-out athletes of the day, Macdara Geraghty and Oisin Burke ran a very tactical race. Both athletes ran out front together putting distance between them and the chasing pack. The race was decided in the last 200metres with Macdara edging out Oisin. Thomas Lambe and Diarmid Seevers-Coen also placed well up the order.
The Junior Boys Race (3000m) was a close race with all athletes bunched together in the opening laps. The Glenamaddy lads competed strongly throughout with Cillian Madden finishing in 2nd and Jack Divilly in 4th place.
The Intermediate Boys Race (4000m) was dominated by Glenamaddy with several athletes featuring up front at different stages including Conor Tully, Ryan Morgan and Brendan Keane. After some very fast laps it became a race between Jason Egan, Aidan Keaveney, Stephen Glynn and Mickey Lyons. In the end it was Mickey, Aidan and Jason taking 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. Well done lads!!
HRC Mountbellew won the Overall Girls Team Trophy and Glenamaddy won the Overall Boys Team Trophy.
All of the Glenamaddy athletes were a credit to our school in the manner in which they conducted themselves. They were tough hard races and they can all be proud of their performances. Well done to all of our athletes and best of luck for the remainder of the season!!
