Course Outline
The senior cycle Home Economics course is broken up into the following main elements:
Food Studies
Resource Management (household finances, appliances)
Consumer Studies
Social Studies (poverty, housing, marriage)
Home Design and Management (interior design, electricity, water, heating, etc.)
Project Work
There is a Practical Cookery element to the course from which 5 specific assignments are specified from the Department of Education and Science. These are group assignments and are written up by each student individually.
There is no practical cookery exam at senior cycle.
Assessment
Coursework Journal - This work 20% and is where the 5 cookery assignments are written up. This is normally completed in fifth year.
Written Exam - This is worth the final 80%. It is a two and half hour exam for both Higher and Ordinary Levels.
