Course Outline
The senior cycle Home Economics course is broken up into the following main elements:
Food Studies
Resource Management (household finances, appliances)
Consumer Studies
Social Studies (poverty, housing, marriage)
Home Design and Management (interior design, electricity, water, heating, etc.)
Project Work
There is a Practical Cookery element to the course from which 5 specific assignments are specified from the Department of Education and Science. These are group assignments and are written up by each student individually.
There is no practical cookery exam at senior cycle.
Assessment
Coursework Journal - This work 20% and is where the 5 cookery assignments are written up. This is normally completed in fifth year.
Written Exam - This is worth the final 80%. It is a two and half hour exam for both Higher and Ordinary Levels.

Course Outline
History at Leaving Cert level is less expansive in its time frame compared to the Junior Cycle course but focuses on certain period in history in more detail. The course is designed to teach the skills required in the modern workplace such as critical thinking and independent decision making. Students who chose history receive a more balanced view of human nature through the experiences of the past.
The course is divided into Later Modern Irish and Later Modern European history (1815-1993). Each period contains 6 topics to be covered, with one topic chosen by the DES as a document based question in the exam for the proceeding 2 years.
Project Work
All history students are required to produce a research report on an issue that interested them within the boundaries if the course. This project is done with the aid of the teacher and is handed up before the written exam with a weighting of 20%.
Assessment
The higher and ordinary level history exams at leaving cert are 2hours 50 minutes long. Students are required to complete the prescribed document question and 3 other questions. The exam is worth 80% of the total marks.

There is a continunity of projects from Junior Cert with more emphasis on accuracy and design. Students would also make past Leaving Cert bench tests in preparation for their final tests. In their final Leaving Cert year they must produce a designated project in both the Higher and Ordinary Levels as well as sitting bench test.
Assessment
The Higher Level is assessed by students producing a design and make project which will give them 150 marks and also a 6 hour bench test which is also worth 150 marks. The design project is completed between the begining of November and the begining of March while the bench test is done the start of May.
In Ordinary Level, a different project is completed in the same time frame and students will also have the same length bench test.
Both levels will also have a theory exam in June to make up the remainder of the marks.
