The Career Guidance Counsellor in the school is Ms. Hardiman. She aims to meet all students from First Year to Leaving Certificate, either individually or in class, each school year. The Guidance Counsellor adopts an "open door" policy in relation to meeting with students, teachers, parents/guardians and management. Priority will always be given to students in crisis.
First and Second Year: During the school year the Guidance Counsellor takes First Years and Second Years for a module on Subject Choice and Study Skills. Cognitive Ability Tests (CAT) are also carried out on all First Years.
Third Year: Early in the school year Third Year students avail of a Study Skills Seminar. The Guidance Counsellor meets all students in their classes for a module on Senior Cycle Options from February onwards. In March the "Senior Cycle Options Night" is held for Third Years, Transition Years and their parents/guardians.

Course Outline
In the S.P.H.E. programme students deal with a wide range of issues that affect their health and well-being. This is a mandatory non-exam programme conducted over the three-year Junior Certificate cycle and it is allocated one class period per week.
Emphasis is placed on building skills, understanding, attitudes and values important to all the ten module areas listed below:
• Belonging and integrating
• Self-management: A sense of purpose
• Communication Skills
• Physical Health
• Friendship
• Relationships and sexuality
• Emotional Health
• Influences and Decisions
• Substance Use
• Personal Safety
Assessment
S.P.H.E. is not currently an exam subject therefore there is no formal assessment. Continuous assessment is done by the individual class teacher on an ongoing basis.

The aim of Junior Cycle Religious Education is to provide students with a framework for encountering and engaging with a variety of religious traditions, especially
Christianity in Ireland and elsewhere.
The syllabus invites student to reflect on their own experiences of religion. Their commitment to a particular religious tradition and/or their search for meaning will be encouraged and supported.
The course is divided into two parts:
Part 1:
Communities of Faith
Foundations of Religion – Christianity
Foundations of Religion – Major World Religions
Part 2:
The Question of Faith
The Celebration of Faith
The Moral Challenge
ASSESSMENT
Religious Education is currently offered as a non-exam subject to all students. Students regularly complete exercises in class to consolidate learning. Students are also given space and time to reflect and meditate in our Religion room and plans to complete the refurbishment of the Oratory are underway and expect to be finished for Sept 2011.

With the opening of the new sportshall and fully equipped fitness gym in 2010, students participate in a wide range of activities during P.E. which is a compulsory subject for all students.
Outside of class time, we also offer an extensive extra curricular sports programme, with teams representing the school in a variety of sports.
Team Sport – First year teams trained by teachers take part in athletics, handball, girls’ football, girls basketball, boys football and boys soccer. Training and trials for school teams take place at lunchtime and after school, and are open to all students. Students who are interested in sport but who do not get selected on school teams can participate in Lunchtime Leagues in basketball and soccer.
Adventure – To foster team spirit amongst First Year students and to introduce them to sporting activities not available in school, a three day trip to an Adventure Centre e.g. Killary Adventure Centre has been arranged in the last few years.
