Transition Year Students entered the RTÉ All Ireland Schools Playwright Competition 2018. The students were required to write a one act play on the theme of “Volunteer”.  Twenty- three plays were shortlisted from a total entry of 231 scripts (124 boys and 107 girls) and three students from GCS were in this selection.

Gerard Heneghan was one of sixteen students who was highly commended for his submission entitled, “The Dream that Ryanair postponed”. Kate McGann and Laura Swift made the shortlist for the top seven award winning scripts. Kate wrote a play called “”1 in 200,000” and Laura entered a script called “Tír Lídre agus Dhaithe”. The final placement order was revealed at an awards ceremony and presentation on May 1, in the Dean Crowe Theatre in Athlone.

Laura Swift was awarded a drama scholarship for a week in The King’s Hospital in Dublin in July and received the sixth- place prize for her script. Kate McGann took home the fifth-place award on the day. Gerard Heneghan also received a prize for his play which was highly commended.

Well done to all students who took part in the O’Connor-Power Debating Competition in St. Jarlath’s College, Tuam last week. Great preparation was put in by all involved. Tara Brady and John Duignan did the school proud with their performances and the icing on the cake was John taking home the award for ‘Best Speaker’.
