It is wonderful to see school tours resume again - none more so than our annual trip to Killary. Finally, after being postponed last year, 73 second year students had the opportunity to enjoy three days of Outdoor Activities in Connemara. For more information and more pictures from the trip please click here.

The best of luck to the two teams representing the school in the Galway / Mayo Inter School Science Quiz on April 7th. The quiz is held annually in GMIT for third year students and it covers Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Maths and General Science Knowledge. The teams are Neva Sirola, Leo Hession Wright and Nicola Joyce and Rebecca Joyce, Deirdre Brosnan and Michaela Gillooly.

Our Junior B Ladies will play their All-Ireland Semi-Final this Friday 11th March @12:30pm in Moate All Whites GAA pitch.

Our Fifth year Ag. Science class attended an Agriaware Farm Walk at Mountbellew Agricultural College during the week. Great to meet a past Ag. Sience student, Diarmuid Lee, who was one the speakers on the day.

Veteran broadcaster Charlie Bird made a much welcomed and heart-warming visit to Glenamaddy Community School on Thursday 3rd March 2022. Charlie’s visit came as part of his preparations ahead of his Croagh Patrick climb in April. Along with his wife Claire and Tiger the dog, Charlie was treated to a lively and enthusiastic session of traditional Irish music in the school’s amphitheatre. Charlie then was invited to the convent house for a cup of tea and some local hospitality. The renowned broadcaster also walked Frass Greenway with Fr. Paddy and many local walkers. This proved to be no bother to Charlie as he keeps fit and active by walking up to 10km a day.

Charlie has lifted the spirits of the country with his stirring efforts to raise money for the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association and Pieta. We wish Charlie the very best as he continues his tour of Ireland in the coming weeks. We also thank him for the hope and inspiration he has brought to so many people since he set out on his journey to share his story following his terminal diagnosis with Motor Neurone Disease.

Well done to GCS student, Shauna Keaveney, who became Connacht Champion at the weekend. She now goes on to fight for a National title in Dublin in March. We wish her all the best!

Congratulations to Davóg O’Flanagan (TY) and Luke Dolan (Fifth Year) on qualifying for the final of Poetry Aloud, a poetry speaking competition organised by Poetry Ireland and the National Library of Ireland.

The South Connacht cross country qualifiers took place in Bushfield, Loughrea on the 26th and 27th of January, 2022. A cohort of GCS students from minor to intermediate level competed on the day.
Jennifer Mahe and Nuala Kilmartin ran in the Minor Girls’ race, while Patrick O’Hagan, Frankie Dowling, Robert Parsons, Morgan O’ Connor, Diarmuid Cummins and Liam Dollard competed in the Minor Boys’ race. The boys’ team qualified for the Connacht Finals.
At Junior Level, Emily Trayers competed, while Michael Giblin and Seán Dollard ran in the boys’ race. Both Michael and Seán qualified for the next round of the competition.
Deirdre Brosnan and Nicola Joyce ran in the Intermediate Girls’ event, while Enda Keane, Dylan Joyce, Luke Dolan and Paul Davis ran the tough 4500m Boys’ Intermediate race. Enda placed 6th and qualified for the Connacht Finals.
Unfortunately, a number of qualifiers from GCS never got to compete in the Connacht Finals on Sunday, February 6th, due to illness. However, Frankie, Robert, Liam and Michael were wonderful representatives of our school and they ran with spirit and determination in what were tough conditions.
Well done to all athletes involved in the 2022 qualifiers.
