Well done to all students who took part in the O’Connor-Power Debating Competition in St. Jarlath’s College, Tuam last week. Great preparation was put in by all involved. Tara Brady and John Duignan did the school proud with their performances and the icing on the cake was John taking home the award for ‘Best Speaker’.  This year, over 10,000 Transition Year students participated in the Press Pass programme, which develops literacy and critical thinking skills while helping students to develop a deeper understanding of news media and how it communicates about the world around them.

The highly popular competition element of the programme drew hundreds of entries from across the country with students entering original pieces across five categories: News, Opinion, Features, Sport, and Photojournalism. The entries were judged by a panel of journalists from NewsBrands Ireland’s members, who had the difficult task of whittling the entries down to a shortlist of 16.

Kate McGann, T.Y. was one of the shortlisted students. She wrote a sports report on the Galway hurler, Joe Canning. and she enjoyed a day along with her family and teacher Ms. Colleran at an awards ceremony in Twitter Dublin on Thursday 26th April, 2018.

Kate is pictured receiving her award in the Sports category at the NewsBrand Ireland Press Pass competition from Kevin Furbank, Deputy Editor of The Irish Mail and member of the judging panel, Richard Bruton, TD, Minister for Education and Skills and Vincent Crowley, Chairman of NewsBrand Ireland.

Well done to our second year public speaking team consisting of Paul Coyne, Saoirse Keane, Saoirse Kelly, Laoise Collins and our speaker on the day Ciaran Lee who represented the school at the county finals in the Connaught Hotel in Galway. They are pictured here with teacher, Mr. Heverin.

Well done to all our third year Home Economics students on the successful completion of their Junior Cert Home Economics Practical exams that took place on Friday 13th and Monday 16th. The cookery exam is worth 35% and their craft OR child development project a further 15% of their total marks. A Public Speaking Workshop was organised for Transition Year students in GCS recently. All TY students were afforded the opportunity to participate in a series of workshops encouraging students to think on their feet. The aim of the programme was to build confidence, find a voice, connect with the audience and deliver a short speech. Alan was very complimentary of the efforts of the TY Group and everyone enjoyed the experience.
